Our work in Universities has focussed on raising awareness of domestic abuse within intimate teenage relationships and talking to students about giving and getting consent in sexual relationships.
Young people living away from home and away from family for the first time often start intimate relationships and are more vulnerable to abuse. 1 in 7 of university students will be severely physically or sexually assaulted. Our aim is to educate young people spot the signs of unhealthy behaviours within relationships and ensure they have information on where to access support.
Current evidence shows the escalation in abusive exploitative relationships between tutors and students and we use the opportunity to talk to students about accessing support if they need help.
ProtectED is the ‘gold standard’ for assessing the work done by universities to ensure their students’ safety, security and wellbeing and Essential Safeguarding have been recognised in their code of practice as an example of good practice.
